Romance Writer Janet Dailey Dies At 69

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — Romance writer Janet Dailey, whose books have sold more than 325 million copies worldwide, has died at her southwest Missouri home. She was 69.

Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home in Branson said Dailey died Saturday in the music resort town. A coroner had not released the cause of death as of Monday, and the funeral home reported that the family said only that Dailey died "peacefully."

Born and raised in Iowa, Dailey moved to Branson in 1978 with her husband, Bill Dailey, who was credited with helping build the town into an entertainment mecca.

Dailey's novels included the popular "Calder" series and her Americana series — 50 books, one set in each state. Her website lists 155 works, including single novels and short story collections as well as the two series.

Whittier writer sells first romance novel at 96

Hilda started out writing on the school paper at Whittier High where she graduated in 1934. “They sent me out to write about all the things the students were doing on campus. The interesting stuff.”

Some of that interesting stuff would find its way into her future romance novels. By ’38, Hilda had found her own romance and was married. She began working as a stenographer for the General Petroleum Co. in Los Angeles while raising two children. Her husband of 61 years, John — the romance in her own life — died in 1999 at age 83.

By then Hilda had been a charter member of the Writers’ Club of Whittier for 20 years, and sold more than 40 short stories to teenage and young adults magazines. But never a romance novel until her 96th year.

Kat Martin - NY Times Bestselling Romance Author

I just received a newsletter from Kat Martin with some great reviews of her Christmas book, The Christmas Clock.

Oh my! Christmas already? It's not even Halloween yet not to mention that Thanksgiving is still almost a month away. Yet I see Christmas decorations up in some of the stores now too. I guess it's never too early to start preparing for the Christmas season.

Anyway I clicked on the link in Kat's newsletter to visit her home on the web ... and found her real life home on the range. I'm so envious! Kat has my dream home! I've always dreamed of having a log cabin in the mountains. I guess when I become as successful an author as Kat is, I will be able to get my log cabin in the mountains too.

Go away, green-eyed jealousy monster!
