Book Review: Second Chances - Love Lost, Love Found by Kristie Leigh Maguire http://askdavid.com/reviews/book/western-romance/2630
Love goes heartbreakingly wrong for this Wyoming cowgirl when her "almost fiancé" dumps her to marry a little redheaded gal he met by chance just a few short weeks ago at the Wild Horse Saloon in Casper, Wyoming. Jane Porter's world spins out of control as she tries to come to terms with the blow that Mike Farley has delivered to her heart by taking another woman as "Mrs. Mike Farley" when Jane has dreamed of that title belonging to her ever since she was a young teenager. When the beautiful Samantha Jo runs away from her hasty marriage to Mike, Jane has a second chance at her dream of becoming Mike's wife. Does she dare give her love a second chance?
The author, Kristie Leigh Maguire, got the inspiration for Second Chances: Love Lost, Love Found from an ad in the classified section of a newspaper and her imagination took over from there. The ad read: "Free wedding dress. Worn only once by mistake."

Passionate Cooks - FREE recipe book
Available October 1st. Pre-order now! FREE!
Description
Food and love have had a long association, for Passionate Cooks: Free Recipes From Today’s Hottest Romance Authors, over 150 authors of the genre have put their pens and computers aside to don aprons, get down and dirty in the kitchen, and share their love of food.Much like romance novels themselves, the dishes range from spicy to sweet. There is something for every taste and every level of culinary expertise. The cookbook includes New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mari Carr’s “Wild Irish” Cream of Crab Soup recipe. Western GBLT author BA Tortuga contributes a dish as spicy and colorful as the straight-shooting author herself with Ranch Hands—a blend of Tabasco, salsa, onions and cumin, added to pinto beans, eggs, Canadian bacon and cheddar cheese and served in a tortilla. And for those of you who are feeling extra creative and sexy, there’s the Avocado Dip that doubles as body paint from mystery writer Marcia James.
Some recipes are simple, such as Down Home Mac & Cheese, while some are more exotic, such as Spicy Shrimp Risotto. There are even some gluten-free selections, like the Sweet and Spicy Gluten-Free Lo Mein-ish Noodles from erotica author Sommer Marsden. And a few are perfectly timed for a Halloween, such as Tracey H. Kitt’s Gamberi del Diavolo or Shrimp of the Devil.
Kristie Leigh Maguire's recipe, Mama's Southern Chicken and Dressing, is included in Passionate Cooks. Kristie's 96 year old mother made this dish every Christmas but she was a true Southern cook making it with a pinch of this and a dash of that. Kristie translated her "pinches and dashes" into a recipe everyone could make.
Best of all, they are FREE! Click HERE to order.

Book Publisher Goes To Court To Recoup Hefty Advances From Prominent Writers
A New York publisher this week filed lawsuits against several prominent writers who failed to deliver books for which they received hefty contractual advances, records show.
The Penguin Group's New York State Supreme Court breach of contract/unjust enrichment complaintsinclude copies of book contracts signed by the respective defendants.
The publisher is seeking repayments from:
* "Prozac Nation" author Elizabeth Wurtzel, who signed a $100,000 deal in 2003 to write "a book for teenagers to help them cope with depression." Penguin wants Wurtzel, seen at right, to return her $33,000 advance (and at least $7500 in interest).

RJ Ellory: detected, crime writer who faked his own glowing reviews
Article from The Telegraph
By Andrew Hough
A best-selling British crime writer, RJ Ellory, used pseudonyms to pen fake glowing reviews about his “magnificent genius” online while simultaneously criticising his rivals.
By Andrew Hough
A best-selling British crime writer, RJ Ellory, used pseudonyms to pen fake glowing reviews about his “magnificent genius” online while simultaneously criticising his rivals.
He admitted he had used fake identities to write about his own work on the
Amazon book site, giving himself five star ratings. He gave his rivals bad
reviews and low ratings using the same pseudonyms.
Ellory, one of Britain's leading authors who has won a variety of awards
including Crime Novel of the Year 2010, was compelled to apologise after
Jeremy Duns, a British spy author
now based in Sweden, aired the accusations on Twitter.
The 47 year-old's apology, in a statement to The Daily Telegraph, came
amid a storm of condemnation from the literary world over the “unfair” and
“misleading” practice, known as “sock puppeting”.
In his fake posts, many of which appeared to have been deleted, he used the names “Nicodemus Jones” and “Jelly Bean” to heap praise on his works.
Ellory, whose real name is Roger Jon Ellory, also attacked his rival authors, including Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride, under the same assumed identities, in a series of withering posts.

She was just a kindergarten teacher barely making ends meet months ago and now she is an indie published New York Times bestselling author who recently turned down a 7-figure book publishing deal to continue on her path, definining her own destiny. I had the privilege of connecting with author Ruth Cardello about her astonishing success and asked her what her advice is for other moms and authors who have a dream of becoming an author but are experiencing nothing but rejection.

Kristie Leigh Maguire's Emails from the Edge re-released
Emails from the Edge: Memoir of an Expat Wife
by Marige K. Tovrea writing as Kristie Leigh Maguire
Kristie Leigh Maguuire has re-released her Emails from the Edge. It is once again available at
Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Smashwords for the new low list price of only $2.99.
Emails from the Edge defies today's world of political correctness where every word is carefully censored so as not to offend anyone. Kristie Leigh Maguire is open, honest, and sometimes over-the-top funny in her email correspondence with her friend back in the States with whom she shares her thoughts and feelings while living overseas as an expatriate wife during the decade of the 90s. Emails from the Edge, gives the reader the feeling of being a voyeur, pulling back the curtain of friendship, and finding out they are not just talking about milk and cookies.
USA Today Bestselling Author Rebecca Forster had this to say, "A bold, honest look at how two cultures collide and lessons learned. Some may think KLM politically incorrect; I say she is courageous to share her honest feelings and inner thoughts. It is really gutsy and fascinating."

No Lady and Her Tramp
Big Al's Books and Pals ...This book is satire. It's supposed to be slightly over the top like a caricature. It isn't the book for those who think anything beyond a kiss is too much sex or that sex is too serious to laugh at. It's not for someone from a small town who feels they're inferior because of it. But for those with the ability to recognize their own foibles and still laugh. For those who can see the humor in the human condition with all its warts exposed. This is the book for you.
Second Chances: Love Lost, Love Found
A sweet contemporary western romance that will warm your heart. One reader stated, "I read it through in an evening, and felt as if I had spent that evening with 'salt of the earth' folk." Another reader said, "I loved the double, no triple, second chance. It was a very sweet ending."

BigAl's Books and Pals: Author Interview: Kristie Leigh Maguire:
In
these interviews I’ll often ask if an author always knew they wanted to be a
writer. It’s one of those questions that are clichĂ©, but often have good
answers. But from your bio I suspect the answer to this would be no. Instead,
why don’t you tell us, what prompted you to become a writer?
I’ve
always been an avid reader but had never seriously considered becoming a writer
although the thought crossed my mind occasionally. However, that changed when I
was living in Japan and couldn’t find books to read that were written in
English. This may sound strange now but remember it was 1997 before the e-book
craze took off with the advent of good e-readers like the Kindle, the Nook, and
the Ipad. It may sound stupid but I decided that if I wanted a book to read, I’d
have to write one myself. Thus my career as a writer was born. I’m just an avid
reader turned writer and author.

Are you ready?

Are you ready?
...to read Desert Heat: What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas, the first novel in the ultra-sensual Affairs of the Heart series by Kristie Leigh Maguire?
Kristie Leigh Maguire presents the ultimate in ultra-sensual modern day romance. She takes you "beyond the kiss" without crossing that tenuous line between eroticism and vulgarity. Her characters are real everyday, ordinary people, not impossibly created heroes and heroines who could only be real in the pages of your average romance novel.
Don't expect the typical romance story with this novel. There are no shrinking violets or shy maiden virgins who long to be taken against their will in Desert Heat. Marcie is a savvy businesswoman who knows what she wants and is willing to go against the odds to get it.
Marcie and Steve have a long-time and mutually satisfying marriage. However, when career changes force them to move from a metropolitan city in Texas to a small crossroads town in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, a surprise is in store for them that neither Marcie nor Steve could have ever anticipated in a million years. Marcie commits the unthinkable. She falls in love with her handsome new boss, Jim. How will Marcie handle being in love with both Steve and Jim? Will this be the end of Marcie's marriage to Steve, the guy who has been by her through thick and thin?
Read Desert Heat and get swept away to another world. Come visit the desert where it is always hot, hot, hot! Live with Marcie, Steve and Jim as they explore the shades of difference between love, sex and friendship. You may never view love or the desert through the same eyes again!
Continue Marcie's story with Cabin Fever: And the Flames Burned Higher - Affairs of the Heart (Book Two).
The beautiful and sexy Marcie Treyhorne is a steel magnolia who knows what she

twist that will hit you like a runaway train. You won't want to miss this
one.
Reader Nina Osier stated, "Once again the Treyhornes' bedroom action fairly scorches the pages, but this time we readers are in for more than a tale of unconventional romance. As we pass through a turning point in Marcie's life with her, the questions she asks herself seem eerily familiar. Enjoyable resolution to what really does turn out to be the second half of a two-part tale.

Why I Write Romance Novels by Donna Fasano
I can’t tell you how many times over the course of my 20-plus year career as a published romance author I have been asked, “When are you going to write a real book? You know, a [insert genre of choice, such as mystery, family saga, historical, thriller, horror, western, etc].” So I’d like to take this opportunity to tell readers why I write romance novels.
I suffered a lot of tragedy while I was growing up, the worst of which was losing my mother just as I was entering my teens. I felt as though I went from 13 to 35 overnight, and when my friends were off having fun, I was cooking and cleaning and helping my little brother with his homework. Romance novels were an escape for me. The Wolf and the Dove, The Far Pavilions, Whitney My Love, Rebecca, The Thorne Birds…if the book featured one man and one woman falling in love, I read it! Romance novels offered me hope for a happy future filled with love (hokey, yes, but I was young).

An interview with internationally famous romance cover model Jimmy Thomas
From the Official Jimmy Thomas Facebook Fan Page....
Read the rest of the interview.
Jimmy Thomas was a sports fanatic at school joining the football, wrestling and cross-country teams, as well as getting into weight-training and martial arts. Jimmy began his active lifestyle at a very young age; from neighborhood sports of football, street & roller-blade hockey, to 2 years on a local soccer team as their team goalie. Jimmy then joined his school's cross-country track team, and also ventured on to the wrestling mat. With all the sports and activities he participated in, he found his biggest liking in weight-training. Along with his high school friend Dave, Jimmy vigorously worked out almost every day during his final years of high school... which led the beginning of who Jimmy Thomas is today. In 1998 Jimmy was introduced to the world of modelling and has become one very sought-after man, staring in ad's for Tommy Hilfiger, Dillard's, and the romance covers we have all grown to love.
For writers who don’t know your story, what’s the background? How did you become a model and what else have you done? Wow, that is such an open question that could go from birth to the present! Well it started when my sister did a few photo shoots that came out great, she suggested I should as well, I thought “Hmmm???… Nah!”… My ex-girlfriend taught Taekwondo and cardio kickboxing classes and we ran into each other and I was heavy into weight-lifting, mentioned that I wanted to lean-up but hated cardio, and she suggested I take her cardio kickboxing classes. I thought “Hmmm???… Nah!” Then I was out at a night club and the most gorgeous woman I had every seen in my life (still to this day), walked up to be with a huge smile, where I instantly looked behind me to see who she was looking at, lol… and her first words were “Tell me you model?!?!?” I chuckled, again looked behind me, and said “Ahhh, no. Why?” And she said “You need to and should!” We hit it off, began dating So her suggesting, or rather insisting, that I model, had me take my ex’s cardio kickboxing class to lean up, and then I shot with my sister’s photographer, and that is where it all began.

Pocket Star to Be E-book Only
Read the rest of the story. As e-books continue to capture more readers that had read mass market paperbacks, Simon & Schuster is re-launching its Pocket Star mass market line as an e-book only imprint. According to the company, “Pocket Star will continue to feature bestselling and debut authors in popular genres including women’s fiction, romance, thrillers, urban fantasy, and mystery.” The revised imprint will feature a mix of new and old title, with the majority being new.Louise Burke, executive v-p and publisher of Pocket, was clear that she expects the e-book Pocket Star imprint to serve in much the same way the mass market version did in the book ecosystem. “Similar to how mass market has served as a platform to develop future hardcover authors, it is our mission to use Pocket Star’s new digital-only format to establish new voices in the marketplace. An eBook imprint is flexible, cost-effective, cutting-edge and makes sense in today’s marketplace. Under the Pocket Star banner we will publish original works including full-length novels and novellas from some of our most popular authors,” Burke said. Price points will vary according to the work.

On my decision to self-publish…
On my decision to self-publish…
If you pay attention to book publishing news and blogs, then you probably already know I’ve decided to try my hand at self-publishing by re-writing and releasing a NEW version of my book The Bitch.
Little did I know when I gave an interview to Galleycat in February that the press would pick up the story so quickly! To date, from that one interview, there have been over 120,000 stories and articles posted online about that one decision.
As you might imagine, the buzz has set off a bit of a firestorm of comments, gossip, conspiracy theories and the like about my publishers and me.
First, I have fantastic relationships with my two publishers, Simon & Schuster UK and St. Martin’s Press US. No juicy story about a tiff or spat between us—we’re good. I’m currently writing my 29th book “The Power Trip,” and it will be published by both companies, respectively.
But times are changing, and technology is changing, so I wanted to experiment with this growing trend of self-publishing.
But I also know that to stay successful, you’ve always got to be thinking two steps ahead of the game. And by all counts, the book industry is going the way of the CD industry. Almost nobody buys CDs anymore; we get our music fix on iTunes.
And more and more people are opting for eBooks over paper. For example, with Goddess of Vengeance, I think we sold an equal amount of hard covers and eBooks.
And in England, they just bought the digital rights to all my books and Lethal Seduction immediately jumped to #2 on the bestseller’s list. That’s a book that’s 10-years-old! I was quite impressed with that.

- “Did she get in a fight with her publishers?”
- “Did they drop her from their roster?”
- “Is she dropping them from her roster?”
- “Does this mean publishing is dead?”
My thoughts on eBooks
Let me say up front that I will personally always love physical books. I love how a new book feels in your hands. I love turning the pages one-by-one as you curl up in a chair and engross yourself in the story.

All changed, changed utterly…
From LB's (Lawrence Block's) Blog:
All these things happened in the space of a week or so:
1. My friend Pat reported that the POD paperback of the book he’d co-authored with my friend Dick had gone on sale quietly at Amazon, with a score of copies sold in the first several days. (The eBook has already been selling for a month or so.)
The book is Bitter Medicine: What I’ve Learned and Teach about Malpractice Lawsuits (And How to Avoid Them), and I’ve been peripherally involved with it since Dick showed me some chapters he’d written several years ago. Dick is Richard Kessler, a retired surgeon and professor of medicine, with extensive service as an expert witness in malpractice lawsuits. Pat is Patrick Trese, also retired after a distinguished career as an Emmy-winning writer and producer at NBC News; in the course of it he’d also written and published a couple of books. I’ve known them both for thirty years or so, and they’ve known each other for about as long, and the partnership turned out to be a good fit. They put in a lot of hours over a couple of years, and wound up with a solid professional manuscript that told important stories in an accessible manner.
But nobody was interested. A couple of agents agreed to look at the manuscript, kept it forever, and then returned it. A publisher, in an uncharacteristic moment of candor, said essentially that every retired doctor wants to write a book, and many of them do, and nobody cares.
And then Pat had a revelation. Neither of the book’s authors was in it for wealth or glory. Dick had had a very important and useful tale to tell, and Pat had found a way to tell it clearly and forcefully, and what they both wanted was for it to be read. And Pat knew a couple of people who’d embraced the revolution of eBooks and self-publishing, and figured why not?

When it comes to e-book publishing, there’s no denying that change is the name of the game. Digital formats allow authors to push boundaries and write between genres, creating truly unusual characters and scenarios. At yesterday's fifth annual E-Book, Indie Publisher And Graphic Novel Expo, we chatted with some of our favorite e-book authors to find out the trends they are noticing in e-books and what type of story elements they would love to see taken to the extreme in upcoming digital releases.

Forgotten
Forgotten
by Jessica Barksdale Inclan
What happens when you do the one thing you would never do? What happens when you forget the one thing you never, ever would forget, not in a million years? How do you keep on living when you are left but your child is not?
Marciela and Matthew Phillips are happily married, a hard working couple, the parents of a beautiful two-year-old girl, Rose. Marciela is determined to avoid the mistakes her own mother made, driving herself to be the best mother, wife, and worker she can be. But after the birth of her second child, Liam, she realizes that doing it all is doing too much.
And then she forgets. And nothing is ever the same.

My review at Amazon:
4.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking,April 9,
2012
Was it a pleasure to read this book? No. It was heartbreaking. Am I glad I read it? Yes. The author was amazing in the telling the of the tragedy that happened to this family. I wanted a happy ending but how could there ever possibly be a happy ending to this story? Or an ending at all? A tragedy of this nature can never be FORGOTTEN.
I would have given this book 5 stars but I knocked off 1 star because some odd mispellings of words ... like amp for map, or at least I assumed the word was supposed to be map. Also words misplaced in phrases, etc. Things like this knocked me out of the story because I was trying to figure out what the author meant to say instead of what was actually said.
I recommend this book but not for light reading. One thing for sure is that if you do read it, you will never forget it.

Donna Fasano's latest release - Nanny and the Professor
Nanny and the Professor
by Donna Fasano
(romance)
Professor Joshua Kingston thought he'd found the perfect nanny for his son. But once Cassie Simmons stepped into his life, she turned it upside down! His son no longer played by the rules – and Cassie kept making up new ones. He would fire her – if he didn't find her so utterly enticing.
Cassie had a huge secret to hide, and she couldn't afford to lose her new job. But her handsome employer wasn't making things easy. All those silly rules. How was an eight-year-old boy supposed to have any fun? The professor definitely needed a lesson in laughter – and love!
Download to your Kindle
Amazon Review (Mel Comley) - 5 stars
Donna has written yet another winner. A touching story about a father who is overprotective of his son. He employs a nanny to look after him. The story was full of twists and turns. I don't like telling the whole story but I would highly recommend it, you'll love it.

About the Author
Growing up the third child of five--yes, smack dab in the
middle and the only girl to boot--Donna Fasano had no idea she would one day
become a published author. Her bent for story-telling came to light when she
conjured lively tales of pure blarney (yes, she has a bit of Irish in her blood)
for, first, her youngest brother, and years later, her children.
Donna sold her first manuscript in 1989, and since then has become a bestselling, award-winning author of over thirty novels and four audio books. She writes under her own name, Donna Fasano, as well as under the pen name Donna Clayton and is known for her "smooth, polished" writing style and for creating "strong, complex" characters. Reviewers have described her stories as "poignant," "richly textured," "enticing," and "absorbing." The writing process can be extremely engrossing for Donna, so much so that she's missed appointments and lunches, and once she even missed her carpool run. Luckily, the people in her life love her enough to make allowances.
Still happily married to her high school sweetheart, she is the mother of two grown sons who have left the nest. She and her husband share their home with Jake, a couch-potato, black and white border collie, and Roo, a spotted tan and cream Australian cattle dog that looks (and acts) like a wild dingo. Donna's spare time is spent reading, hiking, or trying out new recipes from one of the dozens of cookbooks she has collected over the years. Oh, and one night a week she and her hubby nab some alone time from their busy schedules to enjoy a nice glass of wine and a video--preferably a romantic comedy. Donna also volunteers loads of hours to her small church, writing newsletters, scheduling acolytes, working fund-raisers and serving on committees. She divides her time between northern Delaware and Maryland's southern seashore.
Donna loves to hear from her readers. Please contact her through her website at www.DonnaFasano.com.
